UN chief congratulates people of Myanmar on participating historic elections

Xinhua, November 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday congratulated "the people of Myanmar for their patience, dignity and enthusiasm as they participated in Sunday's historic polls."

Ban "commends the Union Election Commission as well as its various state, regional and local institutions for their important work," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said here at a daily news briefing.

"The secretary-general notes that the results of the polls have started to come in," the spokesman said. "He encourages all stakeholders in Myanmar to maintain the dignified spirit, calm and respect throughout the completion of the electoral process."

Polling closed on Sunday and was followed by the vote counting in the presence of candidates, local and international observers and the public.

The Union Election Commission said it will officially release the election results starting on Monday stage by stage.

In Sunday's election, 33.5 million eligible voters in Myanmar cast their votes at more than 46,000 polling stations nationwide.

A total of 6,038 candidates from 91 political parties and 310 independent runners are competing for more than 1,000 seats at three levels of the parliament in the elections. Enditem
