8 quakes jolt India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Xinhua, November 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least eight moderate earthquakes jolted India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands in a span of eight hours Monday, a senior disaster management official said.

However, there have been no reports of any casualty or any major damage to properties yet, he said, on condition of anonymity.

"The first quake hit around 4:12 a.m. (local time) and the last one struck around 10:30 a.m. (local time). Each of the quake measured above 5 on the Richter Scale," the official said.

All earthquakes were recorded at a depth of 30 to 60 kms, he said, adding that no tsunami alert has been issued by India yet.

"Senior disaster management officials have rushed to the remote parts of the islands to assess any damage," the official said.

The central government-controlled archipelago of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal is known to be a high seismic zone and often records tremors. Endit
