Syrian rebels detonate tunnel near ancient citadel of Aleppo

Xinhua, November 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

The armed militant groups detonated a tunnel near the ancient citadel of Syria's northern city of Aleppo on Saturday, causing damages to the citadel's historic gate, state news agency SANA reported.

The militant detonated the tunnel near the western side of the citadel, the second to be detonated near the citadel since last July, according to SANA.

The citadel of Aleppo is a large medieval fortified palace in the center of the old city of Aleppo. It is considered to be one of the oldest and largest castles in the world.

The state news agency spelled no further details, but the activists Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Russian airstrikes targeted several rebel positions in Aleppo coupled with battles on several fronts in that key province near Turkey.

Aleppo, Syria's largest city and once an economic hub, has become carved out between the rebels in the eastern part of the city and the Syrian troops in the west. Endit
