Afghan militancy and counter-militancy have claimed more than 30 lives including a pro-government religious scholar in the eastern part of the country over the past 24 hours, officials said Friday.
In the latest violent incident, which happened in the shape of bomb blast, a pro-government religious scholar lost his life in Ghazni province on Friday, deputy to the provincial police chief Assadullah Shijae said.
"The militants planted a sticky bomb in the car of Mawlawi Jilani Urfani and the device went off today in Shamir area locality of Ghanzi city, killing the Mawlawi," the deputy told Xinhua.
The late Mawlawi was a respected religious scholar and his Friday sermons usually denounced Taliban warmongering policies and condemned suicide attacks as forbidden in Islam.
Shijae also blamed Taliban militants for organizing the deadly bombing and killing of the religious scholar Urfani.
However, the armed outfit has yet to claim responsibility.
Meanwhile, the government forces in crackdown upon insurgents have killed 30 militants loyal to the so-called Islamic State (IS) known as Daesh in Achin district of Nangarhar province.
"The government launched operations against Daesh fighters in parts of Achin district Thursday night and so far, at least 30 insurgents have been killed," district governor Hajji Mohammad Ghalib told local media.
However, he didn't say if there were casualties on security personnel.
Daesh has been challenging the security forces in parts of Nangarhar province over the past couple of months.
Afghan defense ministry in a statement released Friday confirmed the clash in Achin district, noting that units of national army begun attacking Daesh hideouts in different parts of Achin district on Thursday and so far scores of militants have been killed and injured.
Without giving an exact figure on causalities, the statement stressed that the operation would last until the insurgents are swept out from the area. Enditem
