Xinhua, November 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Jovenel Moise of the ruling party unexpectedly defeated opposition candidate Jude Celestin in the first round of presidential race in Haiti and the two men face off in a runoff scheduled for Dec. 27.

Going into the first round, Celestin was the favorite with an approval rating of 33.4 percent, compared with a distant second place for Moise with 17.5 percent.

In the first round of elections on Oct. 25, Moise of the ruling Tet Kale Haitian Party won 32.8 percent of the vote and Celestin of the opposition Alternative League for Progress and Haitian Emancipation, 25 percent, according to preliminary official results revealed Thursday.

Alter Presse daily said security was tight around the headquarters of the Provisional Electoral Council, where the results were announced.

"The publication of the results was awaited amid fear, mistrust and anxiety," said the daily.

The Caribbean nation has a history of political instability that was exacerbated by a U.S.-led coup in 2004 that removed then President Jean-Bertrand Aristide from office before he could complete his second term. Endi
