Cuban President Raul Castro to bolster ties with Mexico

Xinhua, November 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cuban President Raul Castro was expected to arrive in Mexico late Thursday, as part of a state visit to renew bilateral ties.

Marking the start of his state visit, Castro was to meet with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on Friday, who has made efforts to revive ties with Cuba, mirroring Washington's rapprochement with the socialist nation.

Castro will land in Merida, the capital of Mexico's eastern Yucatan state, where the two presidents will meet to review matters of bilateral, regional and global interests.

According to Cuban news agency, Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs Claudia Ruiz Massieu Wednesday hailed the "renewed (and) energized" bilateral ties, saying that "today we are building new avenues of proximity and mutual prosperity."

Mexico-Cuba ties hit a low point during the administrations of former Mexican President Vicente Fox (2000-2006), and his successor Felipe Calderon (2006-2012), both from the pro-business National Action Party.

The two countries established diplomatic ties in 1902, making allies at one time in politics but not economy. Endi
