Eight injured, 20 detained in clashes between Serbs, Croatians at Athens airport

Xinhua, November 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Eight persons were injured and 20 were detained by Greek police on Thursday after clashes between Serbs and Croatians hooligans at the Athens International airport.

The fans of Serbia's Red Star Belgrade soccer team and Croatia's Dynamo Zagreb scuffled at the airport's parking area as they were preparing to depart for their countries.

Dynamo Zagreb was beaten by Greek squad Olympiakos Piraeus with 1-2 goals on Wednesday in the context of the Champions League.

Dozens of members of a Croatian fan club reached Athens despite a ban on the sale of tickets to troublemakers, while on the other hand Serbs traveled to Greece to support their Greek twin soccer club.

Before the game, police detained 77 Croatians, five Serbs and eight Greeks in Athens. A total of 49 fans were found knives, flares and other objects which could be used in clashes.

In central Greece, 36 Serbian fans were detained under similar circumstances. Endit
