T. Leste's strong quake injures 3 people, damages hundreds houses, buildings in Indonesia

Powerful quake in Timor Leste on Wednesday left three people injured and hundreds houses and buildings damaged in East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia, official said here on Thursday.

The Indonesian Meteorology and geophysics Agency reported that the quake was at 6.2 magnitude but the USGS said it was at 6.3 Richer scale.

The quake struck at 10:44 a.m. Jakarta time (0344 GMT) with epicenter at 28 km northeast Alor district of East Nusa Tenggara of Indonesia and with the depth at 89 km, the agency said.

Impact of the quake in Indonesia was recorded in Alor district of the province, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of national disaster management agency told Xinhua via phone.

Two people suffered from serious wound and another got minor injury in the district, Mr. Sutopo said.

The quake seriously damaged 283 houses and left 667 others with light damages, he said.

Ten education facilities and 20 religious facilities had serious damages, and one education facility and 7 religious buildings got minor damages, while 10 health facilities were damaged, Mr. Sutopo said.

The new nation Timor Leste shares one island with Indonesia, which is prone to quake as it sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire." Enditem
