Austria notifies EU of border control extensions

Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner on Wednesday gave the European Commission official notice that the country will extend its present border control implementation until Nov. 15.
The minister also notified that as per an additional paragraph of the Schengen agreement, Austria intends to keep the border controls in place for a further three months past the above date.
The Interior Ministry said the reason given for the extension is that were it not to have occurred, thousands of foreign persons would have been able to enter Austrian territory unchecked.
The controls are therefore in place to ensure an orderly crossing of the border in light of the large numbers of migrants wishing to do so, as well as to ascertain the identities and intended destinations of migrants for domestic security purposes. Endit
