2nd LD Writethruu: Bali airport shut down over volcanic eruption in Indonesia

Xinhua, November 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indonesia closed the international airport on the resort island of Bali on Wednesday as Mount Barujari on a nearby Island erupted, an official said.

"The Ngurah Rai airport of Bali is shut down again," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Management Agency, told Xinhua.

The closure started from 7:05 a.m. Jakarta time (0005 GMT) Wednesday until 7:45 a.m. Jakarta time (0045 GMT) Thursday, he said.

Volcanic ash was spewing from the Mount Barujari in West Nusatenggara province of Lombok Island early Wednesday, he said.

The Bali airport was shut down four hours until late Tuesday as the volcano erupted, according to the agency.

The 2,300-meter Mount Barujari, one of Indonesia's 129 active volcanoes, began eruption on Oct. 25.

Over 200,000 foreign holidaymakers visit Bali Island every month, according to the national statistic bureau. Endit
