The U.S. State Department said Tuesday that it was premature for Moscow to invite Syrian opposition to attend talks in Russia.

Acknowledging having seen reports that Russians will hold a meeting between the Syrian government and members of the opposition next week, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau told reporters that "We think it's premature." (US-Syria-Meeting)

PARIS -- The 38th session of the General Conference of UNESCO opened Tuesday in Paris, during which the governing body of UNESCO will review program and policy plans aimed at achieving the 2015-2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Reiterating the agency's commitment to achieving the 2030 SDGs, the outgoing President of the General Conference, Chinese Vice Minister of Education Hao Ping, hailed "UNESCO's irreplaceable role in dialogue and peace building," saying "dialogue on an equal footing between all countries and civilizations is more important than ever." KIEV -- Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin escaped an apparent assassination attempt when his office was attacked by sniper late Monday, the country' s chief military prosecutor Anatoly Matios said Tuesday.

"Yesterday, at about 9:52 p.m. local time (1952 GMT), the Prosecutor General and his colleagues, who were at a meeting in the prosecutor general's office, came under sniper fire," Matios told a press briefing. (Ukraine-Prosecutor-Assassination)

UNITED NATIONS -- The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on Tuesday spotlighted the urgent need to end child statelessness, calling on all states to take steps in this regard.

The UNHCR released a report in the day to mark one year since the launch of its "I Belong" campaign to end statelessness by 2024, saying that in every 10 minutes, a child is born stateless somewhere in the world and stateless children across the world share the same feelings of discrimination, frustration and despair.
