Kenyan coach appointed to lead Uganda for Olympic Rugby qualifiers

Xinhua, November 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has appointed Kenyan coach Tolbert Onyango to lead the Sevens men's team for the 2016 Olympic Games qualifiers scheduled to take place in South Africa.

Ramzy Olinga, the Union Chief Executive Officer told Xinhua on Tuesday that Onyango has managed the team before and he had been tested as a coach.

In 2013, Onyango coached Uganda in the Confederation of Africa Sevens held in Mombasa, and now returns after Herbert Wafula guided the team for the 2015 Safari Sevens event in Kenya last month.

Onyango told Xinhua in a separate interview on Tuesday that they are working on the defense and hope to be in better form when they travel for the event.

The Olympic qualifiers will take place in Johannesburg Nov. 14-15 with only one nation qualifying from the 12 that will take part.

Besides Uganda, the other competing countries include Kenya, Tunisia, Namibia, Zambia, Madagascar, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland and Mauritius. Endi
