China vows to boost ties with Afghanistan

Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao pledged here on Tuesday to further develop China's friendly relations with Afghanistan.

At a reception marking the 60th anniversary of China-Afghanistan diplomatic ties, Li put forward a four-point proposal to implement the consensus reached between the leaders of the two neighbors.

Both sides should maintain high-level talks and exchange of visits, the Chinese leader said.

China welcomed the attendance at a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of heads of government by chief executive of the Afghan government Abdullah Abdullah next month in China.

Both countries should also earnestly implement bilateral development projects, Li said.

"China will honor its commitment to provide 1.5 billion yuan (237 million U.S. dollars) in aid to Afghanistan in three years," he said.

China will offer 500 million yuan (78.9 million U.S. dollars) this year for the construction of residential buildings in the country.

Moreover, Afghanistan is encouraged to participate in the China-proposed Silk Road Economic Belt, said Li.

Both sides should also enhance their anti-terrorism and defense cooperation.

"China is willing to help Afghanistan build capabilities in anti-terrorism and defence so as to jointly safeguard regional security and stability," the Chinese leader said.

China supports the "Afghan-led and Afghan-owned" reconciliation process with willingness to strengthen cooperation with Afghanistan in the Istanbul process and within the regional and international mechanisms including the SCO.

Li, who arrived in Kabul on Tuesday, met with Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and witnessed the signing of cooperation agreements. Endite
