A third shark attack happened in the Bay of Inhambane in southern Mozambique for the past two months, resulting in a fisherman losing both arms, local news agency reported on Monday.
The attack happened on Sunday in shallow water of the bay, when the fisherman, who was fishing for prawns, pulled his nets ashore, according to the state-owned news agency AIM.
The victim was rushed to local hospital for treatment, but the shark had virtually severed both arms from his body, and the medical team believed there was no option but to amputate them.
This is the third shark attack in the Bay of Inhambane in the last two months. All the victims have been fishermen, and all the attacks took place in shallow water. In the first attack, a fisherman lost an arm, and in the second a woman was severely bitten on her buttocks, and died later in hospital.
The attacks have spread fear among Inhambane fishing communities and attempts have been made, so far with no success, to catch and kill the shark.
The Maritime Administration authorized the hunt, and a team of around 60 fishermen, biologists and local officials were mobilized. They have hunted the shark for the past 10 days or so, but seem no nearer to catching it. Enditem
