Belgian officials are taking part in their first trade mission to Cuba in eight years, local media reported on Monday.

According to public broadcaster RTBF, the Brussels Region minister for external trade, Cecile Jodogne, is leading the visit to Cuban capital, Havana, where meetings have been scheduled with three Cuban ministers.

The trade organisation Bruxelles Invest & Export will share a stand with the Flanders and Wallonia regions of Belgium at the Havana International Fair this week - the country's biggest pan-industry trade event, the broadcaster added.

A spokesperson for Cecile Jodogne is quoted by RTBF saying: "The Cuban economy is opening up and should see a boom in the coming years. The Brussels Region has had a trade envoy in Havana for more than 15 years."

The trade mission comes after the the United Nations General Assembly voted almost unanimously last week to condemn the United States' ongoing embargo against Cuba. Endit
