Philippine president orders probe into alleged bullet-planting at airport

Xinhua, November 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III ordered Monday thorough investigation into the alleged bullet-planting incidents on the baggage of travelers using the country's premier airport.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said Aquino instructed Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya to "cast a wide net on the data on the allegations."

The president met with Abaya and other officials of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) where he was briefed on the bullet-planting allegations.

Lacierda said Aquino wants the "correct identification of the problem so that proper solutions can be given and these are long-term solutions that can be put in place."

Several cases of alleged bullet-planting incidents were reported in NAIA, prompting the travelers to be extra-cautious of their luggage for fear that they could also become victims.

But in the case of a Japanese tourist, who was held at the airport last month after allegations of planting bullets on his baggage, Lacierda said the tourist admitted to authorities that he came from a shooting range and he could have brought with him the two bullets. Endit
