Raptors Casey becomes winningest coach in franchise history

Xinhua, November 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey earned a franchise-best 157 wins in the team's 106-87 victory over Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday evening.

With the win, Casey surpasses former head coach Sam Mitchell, who holds a 156-189 record during his tenure from 2004 to 2008. Mitchell remains the franchise coaching leader in losses (189) and games (345).

Casey currently holds a record of 157-158, which is one win above the .500 mark, something none of previous seven coaches in franchise history have managed to accomplish. Casey has coached 313 games since taking over the head coach gig in the summer of 2011.

"Don't ask," said Casey following the victory, who does not care much for personal accomplishments. "I appreciate all that players that have been here. DeMar DeRozan has been here through the whole number of years."

Casey has seen DeRozan blossom an All-Star. And Casey also has rebuilt a lottery-bound team to a perennial playoff contender with improvements each season.

"We started at the bottom, 30th in the league in defence. A lot of building, and we're still building," said Casey following the game.

In Casey's first two seasons, the team failed to reach the playoffs, finishing with a 23-43 (.348) and 34-48 (.415) records. The two subsequent years saw the team had 48-34 (.585) and 49-33 (.595) records, resulting in back-to-back Atlantic Divisions with first-round playoff exits in both seasons.

"We're in the middle of a process and getting to where we need to go and we're not done," said Casey, who hopes the team can take their performance to the next level and reach the second round of the playoffs for the second time in franchise-history.

With a 3-0 start to the season, Casey's team is off the best start in franchise history and on pace to continue the trend of improving their record under Casey each season. Endi
