China's Liu claims 4th table tennis World Cup title

Xinhua, November 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

China's table tennis player Liu Shiwen got her fourth women's World Cup after sweeping host Kasumi Ishikawa 4-0 here on Sunday, tying the record held by compatriots Wang Nan and Zhang Yining.

Liu was the titleholder in 2009, 2012 and 2013. The top seed upset Germany's Petrissa Solja 4-0 in the semifinals, booking a final encounter with No. 4 seed Ishikawa, who overcame Li Jiao of the Netherlands 4-2.

Liu had a 6-0 record over Ishikawa in their previous meetings.

Both players quickly found their form in the final, where Liu took the opening game 14-12.

Ishikawa didn't pose too much threat to Liu afterwards, as the world No. 2 won at 11-2, 11-9 and 11-2 in the next three games.

Ishikawa bettered Japanese women's record in the tournament, as Ai Fukuhara and Ishikawa herself finished third in 2005 and 2014 respectively.

Solja placed third after beating Li Jiao 4-2. Endi
