Israeli military helps locate wreckage of Russian plane

The Israeli military said on Saturday it has helped Egypt and Russia locate the remains of a Russian airplane that crashed over the Sinai Peninsula Saturday and will continue to assist both countries if needed.

The Russian Airbus A-321, carrying 224 passengers and crew members, departed from Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt early Saturday and headed to St Petersburg in Russia when it crashed over the Sinai Peninsula.

The airplane disappeared from radar about 23 minutes after it had taken off, Egyptian authorities said, and its wreckage was found several hours later, in a mountainous area in Sinai.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that it had been helping both countries locate the exact site of the crash throughout Saturday morning with a surveillance aircraft, and will offer further assistance if necessary.

"Since this morning, the IDF assisted with aerial surveillance in the efforts to locate the Russian airplane that lost contact over the Sinai Peninsula," the Israeli army said in its statement, adding that the military will continue to assist both countries if needed. Endit
