China plans rare plant database for major lake

Xinhua, October 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

China will establish a database to better protect the endangered plants in Poyang Lake, the country's largest freshwater lake that is constantly threatened by pollution and drought.

Located in the eastern Jiangxi Province, Poyang is known for accommodating over a million migratory birds every year and being one of the remaining habitats for "river pigs," but scientists are now calling for more attention to be paid to its botanical diversity, including many endemic plants on the verge of extinction.

An ongoing survey has confirmed that the lake is home to critically endangered plants like Isoetes sinensis that are threatened by human activities and natural disasters, said Yue Xinghua with the Mountain-River-Lake Development Committee of Jiangxi Province.

Yue, who led the survey, said they have collected tens of thousands of samples for the database, which will assist the monitoring and protection of the plants. Endi
