Algeria, Brazil hold 1st ever strategic dialogue to boost cooperation

Algeria and Brazil on Wednesday held their first ever strategic dialogue talks here in Algiers, as part of the visit of Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Luiz Iecker Vieira.

The meeting was co-chaired by the top Brazilian diplomat and his Algerian counterpart Ramtane Lamamra.

The strategic dialogue was first proposed by by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflka and former Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, in 2012, in a bid to give new impetus to the bilateral relations through holding more meetings at all levels.

Brazilian minister said Algeria is the second largest partner of his country in Africa, and can become the first, noting that a delegation of Brazilian businessmen and economic officials is visiting Algeria to discuss investment opportunities in all sectors.

He announced that the two nations are discussing to sign a defense agreement, without providing more details.

Mauro Luiz Iecker Vieira also stressed that Brazil fully supports Algeria in its fight against the scourge of terrorism.

The conference was also an opportunity to discuss and exchange views on some of the most pressing regional and international issues, including South-South cooperation, and the forthcoming summit between Arab nations and Latina America due on Nov. 10 in Saudi Arabia, as well as the summit between Africa and Latina America next year.

Late on Wednesday, the Brazilian minister was received by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Vieira told reporters that Bouteflika invited his Brazilian counterpart, Dilma Roussef, to visit Algeria next year. Endit
