"Anarchist" rams car into Belgian PM's convoy, no injuries: reports

Xinhua, October 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

A man deliberately crashed his car into a convoy carrying Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, without causing any injuries, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to La Derniere Heure newspaper, the incident happened on a motorway south of the capital Brussels on Oct. 21 in the height of the evening rush hour -- but the news has only come to light a week later.

Flemish broadcaster VTM said the prime minister's office has confirmed the incident took place, but would not give any further comment.

The man rammed his car into a state security car that was driving behind the prime minister's vehicle. La Derniere Heure said the driver then tried to overtake and place his car between the two vehicles.

Flemish newspaper De Morgen said security officers shouted through their loudspeaker and the driver eventually pulled over and stopped in the emergency lane of the motorway.

According to the newspaper, the man appeared "confused" when questioned and is suffering from mental health problems. He described himself to police as an "anarchist" who was fond of flashing blue lights.

A terrorist motive has been ruled out, and the man did not realize that the convoy was that of the prime minister, De Morgen added.

The man was known to police for previous similar incidents involving law enforcement vehicles. Enditem
