Spate of shark attacks prompt Australia's research project

Xinhua, October 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Australian government will partner with the University of Tasmania in a research program aimed at curbing the spate of attacks in Australian waters.

Australia's Environment Minster Greg Hunt announced the 17 million U.S. dollar project in Hobart on Wednesday, saying it was prompted by the alarming number amount of shark attacks, 31 this year alone, reported at Australian beaches this year.

"Hobart is developing a worldwide reputation in marine science," Hunt said.

"Conducted by the Marine Biodiversity Hub based in Hobart, the research will take place in Australia's temperate marine waters and lead to better management and protection of our coastal and marine environments."

There have been 13 shark attacks, one which resulted in a fatality, in New South Wales alone so far in 2015.

In July, Tasmania recorded its first shark attack death in 22 years, after a diver was killed by a great white near Lachlan Island. Endit
