UN chief welcomes 1st round voting completion in Cote d'Ivoire elections

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday welcomed the successful voting completion in the first round of Sunday's presidential elections in Cote d'Ivoire.

"As Cote d'Ivoire awaits the final results, the Secretary-General encourages all political leaders and national stakeholders to maintain the peaceful atmosphere that prevailed on election day and to refrain from any statements that may lead to violence or unrest," said a statement released by Ban's spokesperson.

"The Secretary-General reiterates his call on national stakeholders to resolve peacefully any disputes that may arise through established legal procedures," said the statement.

A total of 6.3 million Cote d'Ivoire voters were expected to cast their votes in 19,841 polling stations across the national territory as well as in the diaspora.

The Oct. 25 elections are seen as crucial to restore lasting peace in the West African country after the 2010-2011 post-election violence. The 2010 elections resulted in the death of about 3,000 people after the outbreak of post-election violence characterized by a two-week war between armed supporters of former President Laurent Gbagbo and President Alassane Ouattara.
