The expert witness in the Ratko Mladic case at the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), who was found dead last week, died of natural causes, the public prosecutor of The Hague stated on Tuesday.

Defense expert witness Dusan Dunjic, a forensic expert from Serbia, was found dead at his hotel by a hotel staff member and a representative of the Tribunal last Thursday, the day he was expected to testify in court for the defense team of former Bosnian Serb army commander Mladic.

The autopsy conducted by the Dutch authorities, in attendance of a pathologist from Serbia, led to the conclusion that Dunjic died of natural causes. There were no signs that his life ended through a crime. His body was released to his relatives afterwards.

Dunjic was a professor of forensic medicine from Belgrade. He had testified as expert witness for defense and prosecution in a number of cases before the ICTY, such as the trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic. Endit
