U.S. condemns Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria

The United States Department of State on Tuesday condemned the recent deadly attacks by militant group Boko Haram in Nigeria.

The U.S. "condemns the horrific and indiscriminate attacks ... on October 23 and 24, 2015," State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

"The apparent use of children -- particularly young girls -- to commit these attacks is especially heinous," Kirby said. "It provides yet more examples of the horrific measures Boko Haram is willing to terrorize civilians in northeast Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin region."

At least 27 people have been confirmed dead and 96 others injured in a suicide attack which hit a mosque in Nigeria's city of Yola, capital of the northeastern state of Adamawa last Friday.

The attack came barely 12 hours after a deadly bomb attack targeted a mosque in the neighboring Borno State, killing at least six people and leaving more than 17 injured.

"We offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families and loved ones of the many innocent civilians who were killed and injured," Kirby said. Endit
