1 refugee dies, 3 wounded in car accident in northern France

Xinhua, October 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

One refugee died and three others were slightly wounded after being knocked down by a car overnight, a local news channel reported on Tuesday.

The victims were struck by a car in the town of Cologne, near Calais, where 6,000 migrants mainly from the Middle East have been camping out to try to get to London via the Eurotunnel Channel, BFMTV said.

The dead man was not identified. The others were in their 30s; two were of Syrian origin and one was Palestinian.

According to the report, a man surrendered himself to the police and recognized that he had "hit something last night without realizing they were humans."

The car driver was placed into custody, it added.

Since early June, 11 migrants have been killed while trying to board trains and vehicles heading for Britain on ferries or via the Channel Tunnel.

In August, France said it would build a camp this winter for as many as 1,500 migrants. It also said it would take in 30,000 refugees over the next two years. Endit
