Thousands protest in West Bank, urging Israel to handover bodies of Palestinians

Xinhua, October 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thousands demonstrated on Tuesday in the southern West Bank city of Hebron calling on Israel to hand over the bodies of a number of Palestinians killed in the recent wave of violence.

Parents and relatives of young men, who were shot dead by Israeli troops earlier this month, joined the protests, waving the Palestinian flags and pictures of their children. Kamel Humeid, governor of Hebron, who also attended the protest, called on Israel to give back the bodies.

Senior Fatah movement leader Emad Kharawat called on the international community to exert pressure on Israel to release the bodies, while mayor of Hebron Dawood Za'tari said "holding the bodies is a red line."'

According to the Palestinian Campaign to bring back dead Palestinians, the Israeli authorities are still holding the bodies of 17 Palestinians killed in this month's tensions that broke out in early October with Israel.

The protest in Hebron were held as Israel radio reported that the Israeli army foiled two stabbing attempts in the old city of Hebron, adding that two girls were arrested and when their bags were searched, two knives were found.

Meanwhile, Israeli and Palestinian security officials said on Tuesday that the Israeli security forces arrested overnight and on Tuesday 44 Palestinians in the West Bank cities of Ramallah, Hebron, Nablus and Jenin.

Palestinian security officials said that large Israeli army forces stormed several towns and cities and broke into several houses and arrested 44 Palestinians, saying they are involved in the recent wave of tension.

Meanwhile, a senior Palestinian official announced on Tuesday that a high-ranking delegation representing the International Quartet is scheduled to visit in the Palestinian territories soon, without deciding a specific date for the visit.

The International Quartet for peace in the Middle East comprises the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations.

The aim of the Quartet representatives visit is calm down a flaring wave of tension that has been going on between Israel and the Palestinians in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Endit
