Sri Lanka detains 34 Indian fishermen

Xinhua, October 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Sri Lankan Navy assisted the Sri Lanka Coast Guard to detain 34 Indian fishermen for poaching on Monday, the navy media unit said.

The fishermen were captured off Kankesanthurai, Thalaimannar and the Delft islands, in the north of the island nation. Seven Indian fishing trawlers were also taken into custody.

"The arrested fishermen along with the trawlers which were brought to Kankasanthurai and Thalai-mannar are handed over to the officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Jaffna and Thalai-mannar for onward action," the navy said.

The arrests came a day after Sri Lanka's Fisheries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said 86 Indian fishermen who were in Sri Lankan custody would be released and returned to India. Endit
