Maldives ruling coalition seeks to impeach detained VP

Xinhua, October 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Maldives ruling coalition partners decided on Monday to submit a no- confidence motion against Vice President Ahmed Adheeb who was arrested on Saturday by police, local media reported.

The Parliamentary Groups of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) said the decision was decided during a parliamentary group meeting.

The parties said signatures were collected for the no-confidence motion against Adeeb, who is also the deputy leader of the PPM.

Under the Maldivian constitution, signatures of at least 29 lawmakers are needed to file the motion while 57 votes are required to impeach the vice president of the island nation.

The ruling coalition is represented in the parliament by 48 parliamentarians, but local media reports said that the Jumhooree Party (JP), which has 11 legislators in parliament, has also declared support for the motion.

This would bring the total number of pro-votes to 59, reports said.

Adheeb, who was a close aide of President Abdulla Yameen, was arrested for charges of treason for his alleged involvement in a blast on a presidential speedboat last month.

President Yameen escaped the explosion but his wife and two other security officials were seriously injured in the blast.

The president and his wife had just returned from Saudi Arabia and were approaching capital Male from the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport when the blast occurred.

International investigators who probed the accident said the blast was an assassination attempt on the life of the president. Endit
