Swedish school stabbing spree victims mourned

Xinhua, October 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Locals of Trollhattan in western Sweden mourned on Sunday the loss of two community members after a disguised suspect with alleged racist motives went on a stabbing spree at a local school.

Thousands of residents carried torches through the town of some 45,000 people in the late afternoon, daily newspaper Expressen reported, in memory of the 20-year-old teacher's assistant and 15-year-old student who died in Thursday's attack.

"We will continue to fight for peace and love," the brother of the 20-year-old victim, Lavin Eskandar, told public broadcaster Swedish Television at a mid-afternoon event where mourners held moment of silence.

"All of us are Swedes," he added, standing outside of the school where the 21-year-old suspect allegedly killed his brother and wounded three others, one of them fatally.

Police confirmed on Friday that surveillance footage from the school showed the attacker singling out victims based on their skin color.

Some 260,000 people across Sweden had indicated on Facebook that they intended to observe Sunday's moment of silence remotely.

"It is important that we show that we will not respond to hatred with more hatred, or to racism with more racism, but that we show openness, love and solidarity," the organizer, Robin Mashallah, told Swedish Television.

A 41-year-old teacher injured in the attack remained in hospital in critical but stable condition, daily newspaper Goteborgs-Posten reported. Endit
