Turkey destroys 16 PKK hideouts

Xinhua, October 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Turkey destroyed 16 hideouts and ammunition depots of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in eastern Turkey on Saturday, officials said on Sunday.

The Turkish military destroyed the hideouts, including one of its main shelters in Korhan Yayla region along the Agri Mountain in Agri province, near the Iraqi border, said the Agri Governor's office.

The Turkish security forces seized a Kalashnikov machine gun, 4,140 Kalashnikov ammunition, 500 gram of explosives, 400 Bixi ammunition, a grenade, bullets, documents about the group and other items.

The PKK negotiated a ceasefire with Ankara in 2013, but the truce fell apart in the wake of a suicide bomb attack on July 20 which killed 33 pro-Kurdish and left-wing activists in the country's border town of Suruc in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa.

Tensions have been running high, especially in southeastern Turkey, as major military operations against PKK militants were under way since July, after a cease-fire failed.

The PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. Endit
