Algeria on Saturday urged for speeding up the reform process of the United Nations Security Council amid celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the UN.

The North African nation marked this event by holding a conference at the Foreign Ministry headquarters in upper Algiers.

"Algeria keeps on stressing on the necessity to speed up the reform process of the United Nations in a bid to strengthen its legitimacy and sharpen its efficiency to take on the challenges threatening humanity," Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said at the conference.

He said that in line with the UN's agenda and programs, Algeria will continue national and international efforts aiming at promoting the rule of law, democracy, socio-economic development, the fight against terrorism and South-South cooperation.

He added that Algeria has been playing mediation roles to settle conflicts in the Middle East region. Endit
