Maldivian Vice President Ahmed Adheeb who was arrested on Saturday in capital Male will be offered every opportunity for a defense, the government said in a statement.

Adheeb was arrested on charges of "high treason" over his alleged involvement in a blast on a presidential yacht carrying the President Abdulla Yameen last month.

Home Minister Umar Naseer in a twitter message confirmed the arrest and said that Adheeb had been taken to the police detention center in Dhoonidhoo.

The government said that it would follow all due process in line with the Maldivian law.
