Palestinian shot dead after alleged stabbing attack in West Bank

Xinhua, October 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Palestinian man was shot dead on Saturday after he allegedly attempted to stab an Israeli security guard at a West Bank checkpoint, Israeli officials said.

A military spokesperson said the suspect, holding a knife, ran towards a civilian security personnel at the Jalameh checkpoint near Jenin, a city in the northern West Bank.

Police said the guard immediately responded with fire, killing the suspect.

The incident was the latest in a series of almost daily attacks by Palestinians and violent clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinian young protesters.

Ten Israelis and at least 47 Palestinian have died in clashes or following attacks.

The violence that erupted a month ago was triggered by increased visits by far-right Jewish leaders to the al-Aqsa mosque compound, arousing fears that Israel is plotting to take over the site.

The flashpoint compound is holy to both Muslims and Jews, who know it as the Noble Sanctuary and the Temple Mount respectively. Endit
