Uruguay recall Cavani for World Cup qualifiers

Xinhua, October 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani was recalled to Uruguay's national squad on Friday for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Chile next month.

Cavani missed Uruguay's victories over Bolivia and Colombia in their opening qualifiers for the 2018 tournament in Russia due to suspension.

Uruguay will again be without their Barcelona striker Luis Suarez, who is still serving a nine-match ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during last year's World Cup.

Coach Oscar Tabarez included two Brazil-based players in his 24-man squad: Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Martin Silva and Cruzeiro midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta.

The two-time World Cup winners currently head the South American zone World Cup qualifying standings, ahead of Ecuador and Chile on goal difference.

Los Charruas will play Ecuador in Quito on Nov. 12 before hosting Chile in Montevideo five days later.

Following is the squad:

Goalkeepers: Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray), Martin Silva (Vasco da Gama), Rodrigo Munoz (Libertad))

Defenders: Maxi Pereira (Porto), Emiliano Velazquez (Getafe), Jose Maria Gimenez (Atletico Madrid), Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid), Sebastian Coates (Sunderland), Gaston Silva (Torino), Martin Caceres (Juventus)

Midfielders: Alvaro Pereira (Estudiantes), Giorgian de Arrascaeta (Cruzeiro), Cristian Rodriguez (Independiente), Nicolas Lodeiro (Boca Juniors), Alvaro Gonzalez (Atlas), Arevalo Rios (Tigres), Carlos Sanchez (River Plate), Camilo Mayada (River Plate), Mathias Corujo (Universidad).

Forwards: Diego Rolan (Bordeaux), Jonathan Rodriguez (Deportivo La Coruna), Abel Hernandez (Hull City), Cristhian Stuani (Middlesbrough), Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain). Endi
