Belgian climate deal in sight: report

Ministers in Belgium are "very close" to reaching an agreement on a new range of climate change efforts, Flemish newspaper De Morgen reported on Friday.

According to the report, negotiations between the country's federal government and environment ministers from the three main regions of Belgium (Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia) have stalled for the past six years.

The newspaper cites anonymous sources who indicate that the representatives are now close to reaching a deal on how the burden for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and boosting renewable energy should be shared between them.

Belgium has set aside 247 million euros (272 million U.S. dollars) for new green policies, De Morgen reported, with sources saying a "partial agreement" had been made and a full deal "is certainly not impossible".

Ministers are under pressure to reach a national agreement before the start of a major United Nations climate conference in Paris at the end of November. Endit
