China's drug watchdog issued a circular on Friday to remind patients and medical workers of the possible adverse effects of taking atypical anti-psychotic drugs which are used to treat acute and chronic schizophrenia.
The circular, issued by the China Food and Drug Administration, said that compared with traditional anti-psychotic drugs, atypical anti-psychotic drugs show stronger curative effect.
Anti-psychotic drugs sold in the Chinese market include clozapine, risperidone and olanzapine.
According to the circular, adverse effects caused by atypical anti-psychotic drugs include feeling dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia and epilepsy.
They may also cause reduced immune function, rising blood lipids, weight gain, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and diabetes.
The administration suggested patients follow doctors' prescriptions and know about preventative measures to deal with adverse effects. Doctors should increase monitoring of patients taking the drugs. Endi
