Japan secure Olympic women's hockey berth

Xinhua, October 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Japan have qualified for the women's hockey tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympics, organizers said on Thursday.

The Asian nation progressed after Australia and New Zealand reached the final of the Oceania Cup to be played on Sunday, according to Rio2016.com.

The winner will earn an Olympic berth as continental champions while the loser will also book a spot by virtue of their hockey world league semifinal rankings.

Japan secured a place as the highest-ranked team at the hockey world league semifinals that had not already qualified.

Ten teams have confirmed the presence in Rio next year: Republic of Korea, Great Britain, China, Germany, Argentina, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, United States and India.

The last spot will be decided at the African Hockey Championships, to be played from Oct. 23 to Nov. 1. Endi
