The European Union (EU) on Thursday signed an additional protocol to the Council of Europe Convention on the prevention of terrorism, considered a step ahead in combating security challenges.
The convention dates back to 2005, while the additional protocol was adopted in May 2015, the European Commission said in a press release.
The protocol calls for the criminalization of traveling for terrorist purposes, as well as the financing, facilitation and organization of such travel, implementing the UN Security Council Resolution 2178 on foreign terrorist fighters.
Dimitris Avramopoulos, European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, said: "It is an important step ahead in combating a global security challenge with concrete, legal tools."
"Fighting terrorism is a top priority for the coming years, and today's signing will be instrumental to giving the EU the right toolbox to do so," he added. Endit
