Feature: Thomas the Tank Engine steams into Liverpool in Mattel's first European fun center

Xinhua, October 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Mattel, the U.S.-based toy giant, announced Wednesday it is to create its first family entertainment center in Europe, with a little help from Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam.

The multi-million U.S. dollar fun center is to be created at the historic Albert Dock complex in Liverpool, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Grand Hall of the restored dock, which dates back to the 1840s, is to be transformed into what will be Europe's first Mattel Play, a branded attraction.

Julie Freeland, senior director for Global Live Events and Attractions at Mattel, described Liverpool as the perfect location for what will be a new world-class attraction.

"Our brands are known and loved by children around the world and the architectural splendour of Albert Dock provides the perfect backdrop for launching our first Mattel Play."

The new interactive facility, scheduled to be in the spring of 2016 will be operated for Mattel by Heritage Great Britain who already run major tourist attractions such as Land's End in Cornwall as well as John O'Groats at the northern tip of Scotland.

Freeland described Heritage Great Britain as the perfect partner for the Liverpool venue.

Allan Leach, Heritage Great Britain's CEFO said: "We already have the experience of running some of the biggest visitor attractions and landmark brands in the UK, and now these great British children's brands."

Sue Grindrod from the Albert Dock commented: "This attraction adds an exciting new dimension to the diverse and family friendly offer at Albert Dock which is the most visited tourist attraction in the north west of England."

The products and brands produced by Mattel include Fisher-Price, Barbie dolls, Monster High dolls, Winx Club dolls, Hot Wheels and Matchbox toys, Masters of the Universe and American Girl dolls. Endit
