Poroshenko says Ukraine to get non-lethal military equipment from U.S.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Wednesday that he has reached an agreement with U.S. President Barack Obama on supplying non-lethal military equipment to Ukraine next month.

"I am proud that after my meeting with Barack Obama, in mid-November special long-range counter-battery systems will be delivered to Ukraine," Poroshenko said during his visit to the country's western Ivano-Frankovsk region.

The new radar systems will enable the Ukrainian military to detect the incoming artillery fire and determine the point where it came from, Poroshenko said, without specifying where the counter-battery systems will be used.

Ukraine has asked some countries to support it with non-lethal "defensive weapons" in February amid an armed conflict with pro-independence rebels in eastern part of the country.

On Sept. 1, a comprehensive ceasefire was established in Lugansk and Donetsk regions and the confronting sides are currently withdrawing their heavy weapons from the frontline to cement the truce.

Poroshenko and Obama have met on Sept. 28 in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session. Enditem
