Some 769 individuals will vie for 125 seats in the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan slated for Nov. 1, the Central Election Commission said on Wednesday.
Some 1,246 candidates applied to run in the polls, among which as many as 477 individuals had been rejected, thus lowering the number of independent candidates to 769, the commission said in a statement posted on its website.
Azerbaijan, complying with its commitments as part of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), sent an invitation on July 14 to the OSCE/ODIHR to observe the parliamentary election.
In September, Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Michael Georg Link announced that the ODIHR will not send observers to Azerbaijan citing restrictions on the number of observers being imposed by the country.
Last parliamentary election was held in Azerbaijan on Nov. 7, 2010. The elections were observed by monitors from the European Parliament, the OSCE and the Council of Europe.
Elections of the each convocation of the parliament of Azerbaijan are held each five years on first Sunday of November. Every citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan above 25 may be elected to parliament in an established order. Enditem
