One more patient screened by Singapore General Hospital tested positive for Hepatitis C

One more of the 598 people screened by Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for Hepatitis C has tested positive for the virus, local media reported on Wednesday.

Following SGH's announcement that 22 patients had been infected with Hepatitis C virus on Oct. 6, the hospital started contacting patients who were admitted to its renal wards from January to June this year for screening.

SGH said the virus could have been a contributing factor for the deaths. Singapore's Ministry of Health has appointed an Independent Review Committee to investigate how the cluster could have happened.

The hospital said on Tuesday that it had called the police to ascertain if foul play was involved. As of 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, SGH said that a total of 531 patients screened have tested negative and 66 test results are pending. A total of 299 staff have been screened and all are negative.

Initial investigation showed that "the source of infection might be due to intravenous (IV) injectable agents." Enditem
