Spanish PM presents New Economic Forum award to Juncker

Xinhua, October 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Wednesday presented President of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker with the New Economic Forum prize.

Juncker, former prime minister of Luxembourg until 2013, was president of the Eurogroup from 2013-2014 and has served as president of the European Commission since 2014.

In his acceptance speech, Juncker highlighted Spain's role in Europe, saying "there are too many divisions," adding that without Spain "we would not get very far."

Rajoy said Juncker was an "extraordinary politician, who had dedicated all his life to public service, his country and the project of European integration."

He also highlighted how the upturn in the European economy had coincided with Juncker's arrival at the presidency of the commission.

Both Rajoy and Juncker are attending the statutory congress of the European People's Party which is being held in Madrid on Wednesday and Thursday.

It will be attended by around 750 delegates including German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Endit
