Militant killed, 3 Indian military troopers wounded in Indian-controlled Kashmir gunfight

Xinhua, October 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

A militant was killed and three Indian military troopers were wounded Wednesday in a fierce gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The gunfight broke out in village Kunzer near Tangmarg town of Baramulla district, about 30 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"One militant was killed today in Kunzer in a day-long gunfight," Indian military spokesman Col. N N Joshi said. "Three army soldiers also were wounded while fighting the militant."

According to Joshi, the wounded troopers were immediately evacuated to military base hospital in Srinagar for treatment.

Officials said, the stand-off began early morning after military and police launched searches in area on intelligence inputs suggesting presence of militants.

The slain militant was identified as Nisar Wani, a local cadre of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) outfit.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfights between the two sides take place intermittently across the region.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir. Endit
