Alarm raised in Djibouti over impending "El Nino" rains

Xinhua, October 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Djibouti's National Meteorological Department (ANM) on Monday asked the country's population to be more vigilant during the "El Nino" phenomenon that may disrupt this year's rain season.

ANM said the phenomenon that will result from possible climatic changes in Djibouti will be characterized by excessive rains above the normal levels, especially between October and December this year.

The meteorological department added that the heavy rains will mostly be witnessed in the coastal regions and adjacent zones, and could cause landslides and floods.

It urged the government to take precautionary and preventive measures to protect the population and their property.

El Nino which occurs at least two times in a decade, is an irregularly occurring and complex series of climatic changes affecting the equatorial Pacific region and beyond. It is characterized by the appearance of unusually warm temperatures on the sea surface. Enditem
