Huawei to launch training program for Botswana ICT students

China's telecommunication giant Huawei announced here on Monday that Botswana will become another beneficiary of the company's global informational and communication technology (ICT) training program aimed at cultivating ICT professionals.

The program is designed to develop and transform Botswana's ICT industry as the chosen students will implement what they have learnt in this country, said Deputy Director of Huawei Botswana Ramasala Ntwaetsile, adding that the graduates will have the opportunity to study not only ICT technologies but Huawei corporate culture and Chinese culture.

Established in 2005, Huawei Botswana will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year and officially launch its first Seeds for the Future program here on Nov. 10. Ten best ICT students from the southern African country will be selected to study in China at Huawei's cost.

"For the past 10 years since Huawei operated in Botswana, it has provided a solid contribution in ICT development, provided solution and new technology as now Botswana is experiencing better communication and reduced digital communication cost," he said.

Huawei will work with Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MOESD), Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), University of Botswana (UB) and the Chinese Embassy in Botswana to jointly select the ICT students.

The launch of the program will be another milestone of cooperation between Botswana and China, said Li Nan, counselor of the embassy.

The Chinese government provides scholarship to about 80 students in Botswana every year and so far it has benefited over 500 students.

Permanent Secretary of MTC Neil Fitt said the government is very delighted to see that Huawei has always abided by their aspiration of growing with Botswana and focused on development of local community. "Their launch of Seeds for the Future is yet another good act to promote the development of ICT in Botswana," he said.

Deputy Permanent Secretary of MOESD Simon Coles confirmed the launch of the program is highly in accordance with his ministry's vision of building an "educated and informed nation."

Head of Computer Science Department of UB Audrey Masizana said she looks forward to hearing the students' understanding of China and their knowledge gained when they are back from China.

Seeds for the Future is Huawei's biggest global corporate social responsibilities program in which Huawei leverages its world-leading ICT technologies to cultivate ICT professionals and thus drive knowledge transformation.
