Settlers' provocations lead to serious consequences: Abbas

Xinhua, October 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned Sunday that Israeli settlers' provocations at al-Aqsa Mosque compound in east Jerusalem will lead to serious consequences, the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA) reported.

The Israeli government should stop the settlers' assaults on the Palestinians in the West Bank, Abbas was quoted by WAFA as saying in a telephone conversation with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

Mogherini expressed worries over the growing tension and violence in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, saying that calm has to be restored between the the Israelis and Palestinians.

Hostility escalated recently due to strife over a Jerusalem flashpoint holy site, known by Jews as Temple Mount, and by Arabs as the Noble Sanctuary.

A total of 24 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,000 people injured since early October, while four Israelis died in militant attacks in this period of time.

The tension over east Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound has raised concerns that violence may escalate into conflicts, as thousands of people took the streets over the weekend in protests against the Israeli government and its occupation of the Palestinian territories. Endit
