Columbian cyclist Johan Esteban Chaves crossed the finishing line first after completing the third leg of the inaugural international Abu Dhabi cycling tour which took the 17 participating teams to the mountainous south of the United Ara Emirates (UAE) near Al Ain.

Chaves managed to complete the 142 kilometers long track in 3 hours 28 minutes and 4 seconds. Chavito, as he is nicknamed, told the UAE daily The National that he felt this stage, called the Al Ain stage, was a very hard climb, and even harder in the heat. Outdoor temperatures reached over 35 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

The 25-year old Latin American team member of the Australian race cycling group Orica GreenEdge took over the red jersey from Italian rider Elia Viviani (British Team Sky).

Chaves, who is strong in climbing races, leads in the category general time with a total time of 10:51:12, also conquered the white jersey as the best youngster ahead of the fourth and final day of the 555-kilometers long Abu Dhabi Tour on Sunday.

The green jersey for the category general points is worn tomorrow by Italy's Alessandro Bazzana (Team UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling) who leads with 29 points. Bazzana also wears the black jersey as the best intermediate sprinter, according to the tour's official website.

The fourth and last stage on Sunday will be a 20-laps sprint race on Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island. Endi
